It is still shoulder season in Glacier—despite the fact that it is December. Unusually warm temperatures down low have kept the park in the blustering in-between. They have also kept the road open up to Avalanche Lake, and with a brief window this afternoon, and some new gear to test, I took the chance to introduce a friend to this beautiful lake—always more so out of season.
Despite its renown, and despite the lines of tourists tramping up and down the trail in high summer, Avalanche Lake remains one of my favorite in the park. Today was no exception. The few miles are easy (thus the tourists), but the lake itself has never failed to refresh.
